Marking Time: The Canonical Hours and Church Mission
Exploring the Canonical Hours as a method for the church to intentionally mark time throughout the entirety of human life. The historical practice of daily prayer offices allows individuals to consecrate every moment to a divine mission, rather than viewing faith as a part-time commitment. By examining the specific themes of the eight traditional hours, from the watchful waiting of Matins to the decisional obedience of Prime, these rituals pull one’s humanity through the symbols of faith. Advocating for a modern reappropriation of this medieval wisdom to help both clergy and laity symbolize their total dedication to a religious calling. Ultimately, the text presents the recovery of these rhythmic prayers as a way to transcend the superficiality of the contemporary world and anchor the spirit in a permanent state of worship.
