Songs of the Spirit Movement
The Spirit Movement utilizes song as a pedagogical method of “imaginal education.” Music does not merely “tell” a story; by its very existence, it is designed to cause things to happen. There are three primary functions of song as a tool for transformation:
- Resetting Habits of Thought: Movement songs provide a mechanism for “resetting” self-destructive mental patterns. By introducing new rhythms and tone qualities, the music breaks through the auditory blocks created by culture, allowing the individual to hear the “Word” anew.
- Capturing Imagination: This is the heart of “imaginal education.” These songs are devised to literally reshape the imagination of a community or individuals, replacing defeatist internal images with a clear vision of a decisional future.
- Causing Action: Song creates a “decisional atmosphere” that compels the individual toward their specific missional task.
For years each Global Research Assembly (GRA) compiled a songbook: 1969, 1972, 1973, 1974,1976 GRA, 1976 Council, 1977, 1979 GRA, 1979 Council,1980 Symposium, 1980 and 1980-81, 1983, 1983-1984, 2017
