Memorial Service

THE COST OF MY CARE

Tune: “Anniversary Waltz”;

words by Kay Lush

Given the chance to do life in the deeps,

To serve humankind is the gift that I be.

To care for the Earth is the burden I bear,

Invent with my life, ‘tis the cost of my care.

CHORUS

Strange awe-full power is dancing through me,

Buoyantly forging impossible be.

With all my heart I’m poured out endlessly;

I’m burdened eternally.

Wholly engulfed in unbounded rapport,

Doomed for the world, my life wholly outpoured
Always encumbered, tomorrow is here,

Molding the future the cost of my care.

Burning with wisdom, empowered to do:

The weight of the world for all men everywhere
Guardian of all, to all history an heir:

Absurdly in charge, ’tis the cost of my care.

Repeat first verse without the chorus.

When an event like Kay’s death happens, it makes me so aware of how coming and going is a rhythm of life that happens every day. We – I – do not stand present to that reality until the traumatic happens – like Kay’s leaving us. I keep wondering if she decided self-consciously to say goodbye on the day of Epiphany. She was so intentional and caring in living her life that it would be very much in keeping that she would join the heavenly throng bearing gifts to the Christ-word that gives all of us our freedom. Kay touched many lives while here and we are grateful.

During her life on this planet, Kay freely gave her energy and creativity caring for the pain and suffering in this world. And, perhaps even more importantly, she transmitted to all whom she touched, the Word of Possibility that we are unconditionally loved and free to expend our lives on behalf of other. Kay is not “a bright and shining star in the Universe” and continues to sustain and bless each of us – even as always.

Last weekend, I traveled to Denver to facilitate an RSI. Sunday evening, after the seminar was over, old colleagues gathered at the Denver House to remember Kay. Many wonderful stories as people recalled the time that she and Tim were assigned as priors.. Grace, peace and love,

I can think of no better place to place a memorial gift in memory of Kay then with perpetuating the work that she so tirelessly gave in building our community and mission. What a woman@ What a gift her life was to every one she encountered – even in her serious illness. Those few days with her this spring were one of my awesome highlights of the year. I am so grateful for that special time with her.
