Judith Ann Hickey

April 18, 1943 – December 23, 2022

It is a sad time to tell you of the passing of Judy Hickey last night.  Carl called this Christmas Eve morning, to tell us that Judy breathed her last breath last night.  We wish peace and love to Judy and the Hickey family.

Jack and I first met Judy at Western Maryland College, she a year ahead of us.  In our small private college, Judy was a standout, being selected for many honors including Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities and of course, our Homecoming Queen, with her beauty and grace.  Judy and I sang in the College Choir together for three years.

Yet what really brought us together was the two men in our lives who were attracted to the Order Ecumenical.  Ask Carl sometime to tell you story of how they met and the astonishing things he did to marry his future soulmate.

We all found the order in different ways.  We ended up sharing a ministry at Rogers Memorial UMC in Baltimore in 1969 and 1970, when Carl and Judy and kids interned in the Washington, DC house. They went on to other assignments just as we entered the DC house to begin our intern year.  Sometime ask Jack and Carl for stories about the Rogers Day Care center and other crazy things that happened in those years.

Judy will always be remembered for her gentleness, sharp intellect, caring thoughtfulness, her beautiful smile for everyone and intense love of family and the world. Many blessings on Carl and the family for the loving care of Judy these last difficult years. Grace and peace,

Judy was loved and cherished by many people including : her husband Carl Hickey; her children, Justin Hickey (Gail), Laurie May (Jody) and Cristin Hickey; her grandchildren, Caitlynn Hickey, Jeremy Hickey, Jessica Gervais (Ben), Ella May and Ava May; her great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Vincent; her siblings, John B Jones, VI and Grace Sue Schmidt (Drago); her nephews, Edward Schmidt (Natasha) and Gary Schmidt; her parents, Reverend Doctor John B Jones and Grace H. Jones; and her friend Tané Matsukata. She was also cherished by many other extended family and friends.

Thinking of Carl and the loss of Judy. Louise and Jack – thank you for your story. As I recall the Minneapolis House was launched under the priorship of Robert and Shirley Porter and Carl and Judy Hickey. My  husband at the time and three children attended House Church at a small house in St. Paul, MN. I think it was our first order event following RS-1. The house began with terrific leadership.

We were sorry to learn of Judy’s death.  We worked with Judy and Carl when they were priors of the Rochester House and we were Assoc. Pastors of Dewey Avenue Presbyterian Church, part of the Rochester Galaxy, a few blocks away.  She exemplified the servant spirit and quietly but with joyful energy worked to help facilitate courses and Rochester Region and Dewey Avenue/Maplewood community events.  A couple of remembrances…for one RS1 course, we arrived at the church site and discovered that whoever locally was supposed to be the enablement didn’t show up.  We quickly set up the meeting room. Then, Judy drove into town, found a grocery store, bought food for the weekend, and proceeded to prepare all the meals–everything coming off on time without a further hitch.  She loved music and joined other regional colleagues’ singing, with the Dewey Avenue choir, the Hallelujah Chorus during the Easter service.  The song “Here Am I Send Me” was written and sung during the House breakfast collegium as a send-out for Judy and Carl when they were re-assigned in 1975.  We give thanks for the gift of Judy’s life and remember Carl, who has been her incredible caretaker over the years of her decling health, and their family in prayer as they mourn her death and also celebrate her life. Grace and peace,

Please send my warmest condolences to Carl. Judy and Carl gave greatly and suffered also. They are saints. What generous spirits. Well I remember RS1 calling with Carl in Roanoke, fall of 1969.  With love and warmth for Carl and family,
