Neighborhoods

Some of the earliest work of the Institutes began in the area around their offices on the West Side of Chicago in an area called Fifth City.

This same expertise and perspectives have been replicated in neighborhoods, villages and communities around the planet.

• In 2019, Emerging Ecology began an Enlivening Neighborhoods Project using updated principles first outlined in Joe Mathews’ report to the US Senate in 1968.  This project augments the Institutes’ historic wisdom about grassroots change with the ecological perspectives of Greensboro native, Thomas Berry.
• In 2018 the Uptown Coastal Initiative program was completed, resulting in the Uptown Coastal Toolkit (print version here).
