AN APPROACH TO HELPING COMMUNITIES RESPOND CONSTRUCTIVELY TO CRISIS

This is Module IV, the last module of a four-part introduction to the Crisis-Change-Choice (CCC) psychosocial model for communities responding to crisis, developed by Global Facilitators Serving Communities (GFSC). In the pandemic era, people in every community are experiencing crisis—how do we help ourselves and others respond in constructive ways?

This series offers ways for people with or without formal facilitation training (such as first responders, community elders, teachers, spiritual leaders, and others) to talk about our crisis experiences with neighbors, family members, co-workers, and others. The series is structured as a four-part inquiry, with each module focusing on a specific question:

  • Module I – April 12:  What has been our experience of the past year?

  • Module II: – May 17:  How do we and others experience crisis?

  • Module III – June 14:  What are effective and ineffective ways of responding to crisis?

  • Module IV – July 12:  What changes do we need to make to be more helpful working with groups experiencing crisis?

While all modules are connected, people may participate in one or all of them.

GFSC has for many years offered workshops for local facilitators, first responders and other community ‘helpers’ to strengthen a community’s resilience when responding to crisis, particularly its social bonds and networks. This has usually been applied to natural disaster situations. Examples include following hurricanes in New Orleans and Manila, wildfires near Melbourne, and earthquakes near Santiago de Chile, Quito and Mexico City.

GFSC is a network of volunteers that grew out of discussions at International Association of Facilitators (IAF) conferences. It is a USA-registered non-profit organization.
